Widowed while still very young, Mrs. Rice became a successful businesswoman and lecturer, but found her most satisfying outlet in writing verse for a prominent greeting card company. Her poems received wide exposure in the 1960ís when several were read by Aladdin on the poetry segment of the Lawrence Welk television show. The demand for her poems became so great that her books are still selling steadily after many printings. Before her death, Helen Steiner Rice established the HELEN STEINER RICE FOUNDATION, a nonprofit corporation that awards grants to worthy charitable programs assisting the elderly and the needy in Lorain, Ohio, where Helen Steiner Rice was born and in Greater Cincinnati, Ohio, where Mrs. Rice lived and worked most of her life. Royalties generated by the poetry and inspirational writings of Helen Steiner Rice provide the foundation with the resources to carry out this work.
